Jensen Beach is a well known nesting area for sea turtles, and is frequently visited by those studying marine biology personally and professionally. Barricades are used to protect the nesting areas of the beach. Multiple species of sea turtles nest in the local area. The most common type that nests here is the loggerhead turtle. The others are the leatherback turtle and the green sea turtle. If a nest is found, a marine biologist guesses when the eggs were laid and records this best guess as to a date. They then estimate and record when they think the eggs may hatch. The information is then made clear to the public, so that everyone stays out of the area at night during hatching season. The beach area has been dealing with erosion for years, and nesting is at risk, so it’s important that the nests are protected so that sea turtle populations can thrive.

Jensen Beach used to be an area to farm pineapples in the late 1800s. A gentleman from Denmark, John Laurence Jensen, came to the area in 1881, and began the first pineapple plantation, starting the town of Jensen.

Jensen soon gained popularity and became known as “The Pineapple Capital of the World”. More than a million boxes of pineapples were shipped each June and July all over the world, and eventually a pineapple factory was built.

However, things became difficult in 1895 when a hard freeze hit many small pineapple plantations very hard. Then, in 1908 and 1910, fires hit the pineapple plantations and wiped out a lot of Jensen Beach. The pineapple industry continued to be plagued by financial and agricultural issues, and finally fully fell apart around 1920. Local farmers eventually decided to switch to citrus fruit, instead. Jensen Beach still has a deep history in pineapple, and the fruit is now seen as the town symbol. There is also a Jensen Beach Pineapple Festival every year to celebrate the town’s heritage.
